A piece of history returns home - Bowers Fire Company
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
On March 18, 2009 a piece of history returned home to Bowers Fire Company. Past Chief Bill Hall happened to notice our old 1953 GMC Oren Fire Truck sitting in a demolition yard in Lincoln, DE. It was weathered but you could still read "Bowers Fire Company" on the door. When he relayed the information to our current Chief Phillip Pennington, Sr, he began negotiations to try and get it back. Phil contacted John Macklin of Macklin and Son Demolition and after a few conversations, Mr. Macklin agreed to donate it back to the company. Not only did he donate it back, but he also delivered it. This is more than a truck to our older membership like Ralph Blades who is our oldest living charter member. He could tell us stories of when the truck was in service. Then there is our Ladies Secretary, Lorraine Madden, who is also 1st Vice President for the LADVFA, her father John F. Moyer, Sr. was Chief when the truck was in service and it brought back bittersweet memories for her. Past Chief Lee Jackson was behind the wheel as it was pushed into it's former home. Many of our current members turned out to watch history in the making. Our goal is to have this truck refurbished and parade ready in time for our 75th Anniversary celebration in April of 2013. We hope that bringing back this piece of history will help the younger membership to appreciate how hard our founders had to work to pave the way for our generation. We would also like this piece to represent unity that should be in our company as well as others and the importance of our volunteer firefighters. You can also find us in the Delaware State News and the Dover Post who both did an article on our truck returning home.
