Vessel Fire
Sunday, May 25, 2014
On Sunday May 25th at 1727 hours the Bowers Fire Company along with Sta. 57 South Bowers, Station 53 Leipsic, and Sta. 54 Little Creek were dispatched to a reported boat fire with 6 people possibly in the water. Upon arrival 40-M-1 found no one in the water but a 21 foot vessel heavily involved in flames. Upon arrival of Fireboat 40, immediate suppression efforts were undertaken with the 1500 gpm Bow monitor. Just enough water was applied to knock down the flames without sinking the vessel. The vessel was taken in tow to the State ramp in Bowers where it was winched onto its trailer without releasing any fuel into the water. The vessel had 2 adults and 4 children on board when the fire started. They abandoned the boat and were picked up by a local resident and brought to shore before any marine units arrived on scene. One adult was transported to KGH for evaluation. The vessel was a total loss but no environmental impacts were sustained. Great job by the Delaware Bay Task Force.
