Shirley joined the Bowers Ladies Auxiliary as a junior member. She went to Fire School to become an ambulance attendant and was awarded most ambulance calls in 1984. She is a Life Member with the Auxiliary. She completed the EMT-B class and obtained her NREMT-B card in 2009 and is once again riding the ambulance. She is the current President for the Kent County Volunteer Firefighters Auxiliary and serves on committees for the LADVFA as well. She is the current Secretary for the Kent County Fire Chiefs Association and was appointed Assistant Secretary for the Kent County Volunteer Firefighter's Association. She currently serves as 2nd Vice-President for the Kent County EMS Association.
